Chapter 6: UNFORGIVENESS (answers)

Who Is in Your Dungeon?

In Matthew 18:23–30, the king forgave the slave a $50 million debt. Why did the slave forget how much he had been forgiven?

He did not understand or appreciate what the king had done for him. The enormous favor by the king did not make any lasting impact on the slave.

What does it mean to base our forgiveness on what God has done for us and not what someone did to us?

It means to understand God’s tremendous mercy on us and to never forget how much we’ve been forgiven by Jesus through His death on the cross. Keeping our own forgiveness in mind will overshadow whatever wrongs we have experienced by others.

The king felt compassion for the slave who owed him the debt (Matthew 18:27). What does it mean to feel compassion?

Compassion is an overwhelming feeling of pity for someone. We feel so sorry for the other person that we stop thinking about our own hurt and are moved to forgive.

Why is feeling compassion for our enemy an important ingredient in forgiveness?

To forgive someone we must change the way we view the person who hurt us. Our anger must turn into compassion so that it moves us to forgive. We cannot forgive someone if we still feel anger and hatred for the individual.

Romans 12:19 says, “Never take your own revenge but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.” What does this mean?

Revenge is God’s right alone. If the person who hurt us never repents or asks forgiveness, the Lord promises to bring justice on that person. We must trust Him to handle the situation and not take matters into our own hands by taking our own revenge.

When we forgive, we choose to take responsibility for the debt the person owes us. What is the proof that we have done this and have truly forgiven?

We choose to stop choking our enemy, trying to get the individual to repay us. We quit expecting the other person to apologize to us or admit to us they did wrong.

Luke 6:35 says that if we expect nothing in return from the person who hurt us, Jesus promises that our “reward will be great.” What does this mean?

God will more than make up the difference for whatever we lost on earth by giving us a much greater reward in heaven, which will last for all eternity.

How can we stop thinking about what the person did to us?

We choose to stop recalling the past, which means we’ve got to stop talking about what the other person did to us.

How can we release and let go of the person who hurt us?

We must unlock the chains by using the key of forgiveness. To release someone, we must “let go.” Just like we can stop holding onto someone by letting go with our hands, we stop holding onto our enemy by letting go with our spiritual hands.

What happens to us
